Tendonitis Surgery Dallas

Inflamed tendons can cause severe discomfort that greatly limits activity. One effective treatment method that may be used whenever conventional options have failed is tendonitis surgery. Performed by board-certified plastic surgeon Charles A. Wallace, M.D. tendonitis surgery can help restore movement for Plano and Frisco area patients affected by this condition.

What is Tendonitis?

The body is full of tendons – the long, fibrous bands that hold muscle and bone together. There are as many as 4,000 tendons throughout the human body and tendonitis occurs whenever any of these tendons become torn or inflamed, thereby resulting in inflammation and pain. While tendonitis may be present anywhere, it is most commonly found in the elbow, shoulder, wrist and knee.

Tendonitis surgery to repair torn tendons involves making a tiny incision in the skin so that the two sections may be sewn back together. In the event the tendon isn’t healthy enough to reconnect, a tendon graft may then be performed by removing a section of tendon from the foot or toe and splicing it in place.

De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis results from swollen and/or constricted tendons near the base of the thumb. This can make it difficult for an individual to grasp objects or make a fist. There may also be swelling and discomfort present on the thumb side of the wrist, or a popping noise heard when flexing the thumb.

There are six compartments or openings along the back of the wrist. The first and third openings contain tendons and a soft-tissue covering known as synovium. De Quervain’s tendonitis treatment is performed to release pressure by opening these compartments and may include trimming the synovium to provide more room for tendons to move.

Benefits of Tendonitis Surgery

The following are a few of the benefits of tendonitis surgery:

  • Most surgeries are outpatient procedures
  • Provides relief almost immediately
  • Can greatly reduce the need for medication and may also help patients eliminate splints
Allows for a greater range of motion

Is Tendonitis Surgery Right for Me?

Tendonitis surgery is normally recommended only after trying other treatment options. If those methods have not provided you with full relief, it may be time to consider tendonitis surgery.

Elements of a Tendonitis Surgery

The following elements are common, regardless of the area in which Dr. Wallace operates:

  • Tiny incisions in the skin so that tendons may be accessed
  • Tendon and other soft tissue repair

After Your Tendonitis Surgery

You may be given strengthening exercises to do if your tendonitis surgery was performed on the hand or wrist. Perform these exercises as directed by Dr. Wallace. Ensure any bandages or splints remain in place until after your follow-up visit in our office.

Getting Back to Normal Following Tendonitis Surgery

It is important that you avoid overusing your tendon for a few weeks afterwards. As such, you may need to take up to 12 weeks off from work or significantly modify your activities. Physical therapy could be required for you to fully regain usage.
