Labiaplasty

One of the fastest growing surgeries in the country is labiaplasty. Board-certified plastic surgeon Charles A. Wallace, M.D., is considered a top provider of labiaplasty surgery in Dallas, TX. He frequently performs this procedure to reduce the size of the labia minora, the flaps of skin on either side of the vaginal opening.

What is a Labiaplasty?

Surgical labia reduction, or vaginal rejuvenation, to change the appearance of the female genitals is called a labiaplasty. It’s natural and normal for a woman to have noticeable skin folds around her vaginal opening. In most cases, this shouldn’t cause any problems. However, some women feel their vaginal lips should look a certain way.

It’s true that very small labia minora represents society’s current ideal, but it’s quite natural for the labia minora to vary in appearance. The size, color, and shape of labia vary significantly and may change as a result of childbirth, aging, and other events. A labiaplasty with Dr. Wallace will discreetly and delicately allow you to achieve the more symmetrical look you desire.

The Best Candidates for Labiaplasty

Candidates for labiaplasty must be in good health and have realistic expectations for their results. Most often, labiaplasty candidates seek treatment for purely cosmetic reasons. Some women are dissatisfied with the appearance of their labia, even when they look perfectly normal and acceptable to a health professional examining them. In other cases, women seek labiaplasty to alleviate “mobility issues,” soreness, and/or chafing.

Planning Your Labiaplasty

In your initial consultation, Dr. Wallace will evaluate your health and body to determine the procedural approach that will best suit your individual body. You can trust Dr. Wallace, so you can be candid in discussing your expectations with him. He will be equally frank with you, describing the procedure in detail, in addition to explaining the anesthesia he will use.

Preparing for Your Labiaplasty Surgery

During your consultation, don’t hesitate to ask Dr. Wallace any questions you may have, especially those regarding your expectations and concerns about the results. Dr. Wallace will provide you with all the information you need to be fully prepared for your procedure, as well as your post-operative recovery.

The Labiaplasty Procedure

A labiaplasty involves shortening or reshaping the vaginal lips. Surgery usually lasts just a few short hours and consists of cutting away unwanted tissue with a scalpel or possibly a laser. The loose edge may be stitched up with fine, dissolvable stitches.

The most common technique utilized by Dr. Wallace in labiaplasty surgery is the modified or extended wedge technique. This technique takes a wedge from the inner labia skin and takes a downward-facing wedge on the outer labia. This means the outer scar does not go horizontally across the labia. Instead, it lays in the crease between the outer and inner labia, in a vertical orientation.

Once this scar heals it is difficult to find it. On the inner surface, the scar is horizontal towards the vaginal opening and also heals to a nearly imperceptible scar.

How Much Does Labiaplasty Cost?

The price of a labiaplasty varies from patient to patient and depends on the individual needs of each person. Dr. Wallace will perform an initial assessment of the treatment area to develop a customized treatment plan to address your specific needs. He will then discuss the cost associated with your specific procedure.

After Your Labiaplasty Surgery

Post-surgery, your scars will be very fine and hidden within natural skin creases, making them very difficult to spot even from up close. Sensation is improved since there are no flaps of extra skin in the way.

Most patients of Dr. Wallace report a mild recovery. You should be able to walk for daily activities shortly after the completion of surgery. You can shower 24 hours after surgery, taking care to avoid rubbing or pulling on or around incision lines. Until the incisions are fully healed, you should refrain from taking baths, soaking in tubs, and using hot tubs or swimming pools.

Typically, swelling and soreness are most noticeable for the first three days. Swelling will subside over two to three weeks following surgery. Patients are advised to avoid sexual intercourse and any activity that causes friction, pulling, or stretching at the labia for the first eight weeks. This is the best way to prevent complications, such as the opening of the incision or little holes along the incision line.

Getting Back to Normal Following Your Labiaplasty

Dr. Wallace will monitor your labiaplasty recovery. He will advise you when you no longer need to restrict your activities and can completely resume your normal lifestyle. Many patients of Dr. Wallace feel like they can be less self-conscious and can even be confident about the appearance of their genitals after labiaplasty.
