Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Does it work?
A: Laser permanent hair reduction has had a checkered
history over the years since 1997 since it was introduced.
The original lasers and laser-like devices were frequently
ineffective and led to temporary results. We now use the
Light Sheer laser and see improved results with long-term
hair reduction in almost all patients, though dark hair
patients are the best candidates.
Q: Which laser do you use?
A: Currently, for laser permanent hair reduction, we use
the Light Sheer laser.
Q: How do I know if it is right for me?
A: Laser permanent hair reduction is a relatively
simple undertaking with relatively minor risks in competent
hands. A visit to the clinic will allow us to quickly
evaluate if your skin color and hair type is such that we
can safely treat. As stated above, the best patients are
those with fair skin and dark hair, although with the Light
Sheer laser, medium toned skin and lighter hair can be well
treated.
Q: Does it hurt?
A: Laser permanent hair reduction has been compared to
being popped lightly with a rubber band. It does not require
an anesthetic or sedation and most people do not find it
particularly uncomfortable.
Q: How many treatments are required?
A: This will vary from patient to patient and the area
being treated. Coarse hair in thinner skin regions must be
treated more delicately, but definitely will require more
than two or three treatments. Finer hair in thicker skin can
be treated more aggressively. In general, one should plan
three to five treatments. Some people, for obscure reasons,
will be more resistant and will require more treatments or
will observe the laser to be less effective.
Q: Does it work on all colors of hair?
A: The equipment that we have is most effective on medium
to dark hair with light to medium color of skin. For
patients that fall outside this realm, there are other
machines available and if we feel that a different machine
will offer you better results, we will refer you to an
appropriate facility for your skin type.
