Hand Surgery
Hand surgery is an interesting area of plastic surgery that overlaps considerably with orthopedic surgery. While all board certified plastic surgeons are trained in hand surgery, many plastic surgeons do not find it terribly interesting and / or choose not to make it part of their private practice. I have always enjoyed hand surgery and find it very challenging, particularly the major trauma situations from lawnmower injuries, auto accidents, and so on. I continue to offer hand surgery services, including repair of tendons, ganglions, nerves, fractures, dislocations, microscopic surgery of nerves and vessels, and similar sorts of things from the wrist down. Patients are referred to a specialized hand therapist afterwards for followup care.
I find that lessons learned from dealing with difficult hand injuries frequently overlap with the delicate surgery of the face, as the size of the blood vessels, nerves, and structures are somewhat similar. Additionally, experience gained in dealing with the bones of the hand translates similarly to management of facial fractures, the nasal bones and other similar matters of the face and many of the techniques overlap. For more detailed information as to the procedures we offer for hand injuries and problems, please do not hesitate to call the office.
